Blandford Forum, Dorset, dates back to Anglo Saxon times and like so many villages in this Dorset rural area, this market town lies on a river, which in this case, is the River Stour. The renowned English writer Thomas Hardy portrayed the town using the fictional name ‘Shottsford Forum’ in his wonderful novels of rural England.
Blandford Forum, Dorset (Map) was virtually wiped out by a fire in the early part of the 18th century and it was later rebuilt with many of its unique Georgian buildings remaining to this day. It includes the parish church of St Peter and St Paul and a market place that holds many festivities year round. It is home to the ‘Badger’ real ales and the Royal Signals Museum and each year hosts a Great Dorset Steam Day. The renowned and nationally praised independent Bryanston School is nearby, founded in 1928, while south of Blandford Forum town is a six-arched stone bridge over the Stour. The town also boasts of its Cavalcade of Costume Museum, a fine collection of over 250 years of costume history.
